Jayhawks seek season sweep of Cornhuskers

02/21/2009 - Lawrence, KS (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 15th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks close out a two-game homestand this afternoon, as they welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to Lawrence for a Big 12 showdown from the Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks are still in the hunt for the Big 12 title, sitting just one game behind league-leading Oklahoma. KU is the four-time defending Big 12 champion and has won or shared eight of the 12 conference crowns since the inception of the league in 1996-97. Kansas has won two straight games and 10 of its last 11, including a 72-55 victory over Iowa State this week. The win over the Cyclones was the team's 15th home win in 16 games this season

The Cornhuskers, who are 6-5 in league play this season, have played well of late, with four wins in their last five games, including Wednesday's 46-41 decision against Colorado in Lincoln. Nebraska has struggled on the road this season, with a 3-5 mark.

Kansas has won 12 straight in this series to take a 165-71 lead overall. The Jayhawks are seeking the regular season sweep after recording a 68-62 win in Lincoln on January 28th.

Nebraska is at its best when it allows its defensive pressure to set things up at the offensive end. The team is one of the better defensive teams in the league, allowing just 58.2 ppg. However, the Cornhuskers have really been beat up on the boards, getting outrebounded by 4.5 rebounds per game. A big reason for that is that the starting five is on the small side, with the biggest player standing just 6-5. The offensive weapons are few, with only Ade Dagunduro and Steve Harley averaging double figures at 12.0 and 10.7 ppg, respectively. Nebraska shot just 34.6 percent from the floor against the Buffaloes this week, but held Colorado to a mere 31 percent shooting, while forcing 16 turnovers. Dagunduro was the only player to make a significant offensive contribution, finishing with 18 points.

The Cornhuskers will need to play stellar defense if they are to hang around in Lawrence. Kansas is one of the most balanced teams in the conference, with a +12.6 scoring margin. KU is averaging a steady 77.3 ppg this year, while allowing 64.1 ppg. The Jayhawks lead the conference in field-goal percentage defense (.381), rebounding defense (31.4) and rebounding margin (+7.2). Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich give the team balance inside and out. Collins is one of the Big 12's best court generals, showing the ability to be both a scorer (17.8 ppg) and distributor (131 assists). Aldrich is the resident muscle in the middle, averaging a double-double with 14.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. It was more of the same in the win over Iowa State this week, as Collins and Aldrich both tallied 22 points. Aldrich completed the double-double with 11 boards. Kansas outrebounded ISU by 10 boards (39-29) and shot 50 percent from the floor.
